Sales Coach Tip: Sales Motivation

This question was asked on linkedin.com.  “Motivation!  As a sales professional, what motivates you and drives you to achieve success?”  Below is my public answer.

This is a great question.  I have found that working with 100’s of sales professionals at various levels, that they all have very different internal drivers that motivate them.  I believe also that there is no right answer here, however, I challenge my clients to dig deeper, much deeper, to really get to what they truly want, and why achieving certain results is really important to them.

Often, sales professionals initially think they are motivated by one of the following: competitive drive, want to be #1, want to make a lot of money, like to close new business, being passionate about their product/service, being challenged, recognition, pride, growth, helping others, winning and so on.  It is true that those factors, or one of those factors may play a role, but when we go further/deeper, they often find that there is something much more important and meaningful to them in their life, that achieving sales success will help them achieve or attain.

Once they have found that true internal driving factor, their motivation and performance reaches an all time peak level.
